Tcl 65s403 65 4k Uhd Smart Roku Led Tv Reviews

TCL showed a ton of promise with its P-Serial 4K TV, offering fantabulous pic and Roku Television receiver continued features at a very reasonable price. It was originally planned to come in 50-, 55-, and 65-inch models, but only the 55-inch version was released and the other two were cancelled. We hoped to run across similar performance with TCL'southward fifty-fifty less expensive S-Series, another 4K Television line that also supports high dynamic range (HDR). Unfortunately, the 55-inch, $499.99 55S405 we tested just doesn't compare with its higher-end sibling. Information technology's a good budget television in its own right with a very friendly toll tag, but the TCL 55P607 boasts six times the dissimilarity, twice the effulgence, ameliorate black levels, and wider color range for just $150 more.

Editors' Note: This review is based on tests performed on the 55S405, the 55-inch model in the serial. Apart from screen size deviation, the 65-inch $799.99 65S405 is identical in features, and we expect like performance.

Design

The S-Series has an unassuming, apparently design we've come to expect from virtually budget TVs. The screen is framed by a slightly curved, glossy black plastic bezel that measures 0.6 inches on the top and sides and 0.8 inches on the lesser. A argent-colored TCL logo sits in the middle of the lesser bezel and a smaller Roku Idiot box logo sits at the lower correct corner, but the edges of the TV otherwise lack whatsoever decoration. The screen sits on two argent-colored feet shaped like shallow Us and located well-nigh the sides of the bottom edge.

The power connector sits on the right side of the back of the Goggle box, most the border. All other connections sit closer to the left side on the back. Three HDMI ports, a USB port, an antenna/cable connector, an optical sound output, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a reset button face left from the back of the Idiot box. A composite video output and Ethernet port face straight dorsum. Three HDMI ports is sparse even for a budget telly, but the step-up P-Series has the same limited number. 4 or five HDMI ports would have been nice, but it isn't a deal billow (specially since the Roku Television receiver platform ways you probably don't demand to plug in a separate media streamer).

Roku TV and Remote

The included remote is a standard Roku TV part, a v.5-inch rounded black wand with a prominent, plus-shaped, purple navigation pad. The pad is easy to find nether the thumb, and defended service buttons offering straight access to Amazon, HBO Now, Netflix, and Sling Idiot box. A volume rocker and mute push sit on the right side, just dissimilar the P-Series' Enhanced Remote, there is no headphone jack or pinhole mic to be found. This is an IR-just control that requires line of sight with the TV, and doesn't wirelessly stream audio or support vox search. For those features, y'all need to get the 55P607 or a Roku Premiere+ media streamer.

TCL 55S405

Every bit a Roku Telly device, the S-Series uses Roku'due south media streamer applied science for its connected features and interface. Information technology allows for access to the thousands of different apps and services available on Roku media streamers as Roku Channels, which include nearly all the big names. There's Amazon, Crunchyroll, Google Play Movies & Tv set, Hulu, Netflix, Sling, Twitch, and hundreds of other regional, genre-focused, and downright esoteric video services (I'thousand personally a fan of Shout! Factory Television and its offerings of Mystery Scientific discipline Theater 3000 and Rifftrax episodes and diverse cult films and series).

The Roku mobile app adds the vocalization search and streaming audio features missing from the non-Enhanced remote, letting you search for content using your phonation or listen to any's on TV over headphones plugged into your smartphone or tablet.

Performance

While the Due south-Series can take high dynamic range (HDR) content, its picture quality doesn't really reverberate that. We test TVs using a DVDO AVLab 4K examination pattern generator, a Klein K-10A colorimeter, and Portrait Displays' CalMAN 5 software on a Razer Blade Pro laptop using testing methodology based on Imaging Science Foundation's calibration techniques.

The S-Series doesn't perform nearly too as the TCL 55P607, showing a acme brightness less than half that equally the P-Series (249.73cd/thousand2 compared with 507.85cd/m2) and a much less inky impressive black level (0.06cd/m2 compared with 0.01cd/thou2). The upshot is an constructive contrast ratio of 4,162:ane, a sixth of the 55P607'south 25,393:ane. The Due south-Serial' numbers are pocket-sized and fairly standard for budget TVs, but when held against its slightly pricier sibling, the difference is astonishing.

TCL 55S405

Colour performance out of the box is disappointing. The chart to a higher place shows Rec.709 color levels every bit boxes and measured color values as dots. Whites lean a chip cool, which isn't uncommon for budget TVs. What is uncommon is for reds to lean so far toward yellow, which means you'll come across less crimsons and scarlets and more orange hues. In one case once more the 55P607 far outstripes the S-Series, with a wider range of much more accurate colors. The LeEco Super4 X55 also displays better colors than the 55S405, though its contrast numbers are similarly mediocre.

Planet Earth II on Ultra Hard disk drive Blu-ray looks fairly practiced, just the mediocre contrast numbers and slightly skewed colors become apparent in the "Island" episode. The blues of the water and the sky look natural, simply some shades of green in the leaves occasionally appear a chip more yellow than ideal, and the sunlit scenes aren't quite as warm as they should be. Fine detail in sloth fur appears cleanly, but sometimes looks washed out nether the sunlight.

The red of the title graphic symbol'due south costume in Deadpool looks vibrant and not affected by the xanthous drift we measured. The aforementioned tin can't be said for peel tones, which appear a scrap sickly. The called-for lab fight looks adept, with brilliant, natural yellows and oranges for the flames. However, the Idiot box's mediocre contrast causes some shadow details to disappear in the darker parts of the frame.

Characters in The Great Gatsby also await slightly pale and unhealthy due to the colour skewing, specially in indoor scenes. In the outdoor nighttime party settings, fine details in the black suits and nighttime hair disappear in slight muddiness, and the contours of jackets sometimes vanish.

Input Lag and Power Consumption

Input lag is the amount of time between when a Tv receives a signal and the display updates to lucifer it. The S-Series stands strongly alongside the 55P607 in this field, with a 31.5ms lag in Movie mode and a mere 15ms lag with the color-compromising Game mode enabled. If you lot want better functioning than this, yous'll have to look for a defended gaming monitor.

Nether normal viewing conditions, the S-Series consumes 99 watts. Setting the TV to a darker backlight can cut that down to 60 watts while keeping information technology very watchable. These are good, merely non surprising, ability numbers for a 55-inch LED-backlit TV. For comparison, the 55P607 consumes 123 watts in its much brighter Calibrated picture mode, while cutting the backlight to Low Power way reduces that number to 64 watts.

Conclusions

Taken on its own, the TCL S-Series is a perfectly good budget television with decent performance. It compares favorably with the Hisense H9 and LeEco Super4 Series despite inferior color performance, thanks to its Roku Tv convenience and much lower price. Knowing the TCL 55P607 is out at that place, though, makes the Southward-Series seem just that much dimmer. It'southward a shame we won't see the P-Serial in the same variety of screen sizes as the S-Series, which is why despite its flaws, TCL's Southward-Series is still a good deal if y'all're looking to jump to 4K without paying a whole lot.

Across the 55P607, significantly better picture quality will require spending ii or three times as much equally the South-Series for the same size Boob tube. The Samsung MU9000 Series offers splendid picture quality for an LED-backlit screen, while the LG OLEDC7P line remains our Editors' Choice for the meridian dissimilarity and color of its OLED panel.

TCL 65S405

The Bottom Line

When not viewed through the lens of its far superior P-Series model, the TCL S-Series of 4K TVs offer capable just unimpressive performance for a very low price.
